The Jeep Liberty debuted in 2002 and spawned two generations from its 10-year run. The Liberty became the replacement of the Cherokee in the United States.  It was an all-around SUV that combined all the popular Cherokee trims and engine displacements into one model. The Jeep KJ is the first-generation Liberty and inspired by the Dakar and Jeepster concept cars. This SUV had Renegade, Limited, and Sport trims, all with two-wheel and four-wheel-drive options. It was also the first Jeep to use PowerTech engines and the first Jeep to have an independent front suspension since the 1963-1965 Jeep Wagoneer.

The KJ model continued production until 2007, with a major redesign being made for the 2008 model year. Now having a standard four-wheel-drive variation, the second-generation Liberty KK model now has a more rugged, boxy, off-road look similar to the Dodge Nitro. The Jeep KK ran from 2009 to 2012, having various upgrades along the way, such as updated infotainment systems and parking sensors.
