Fashioned from rubber and similar materials, drive belts are used to connect two or more pulleys. They’re used to transfer power from the camshaft or crank to various components, including the air pump, generator, alternator, and power steering pump. The two most commonly used drive belts are serpentine belts and v-belts. V-belts are thicker and narrower than serpentine belts, while the latter can also fold back and alter direction.
Timing belts, in contrast, connect the crankshaft to the camshaft. They also keep both components synchronized. Once a drive belt fails, then the accessory or accessories it was responsible for transferring power to will no longer function. These could lead to critical malfunctions, such as inadequate power steering.

How many belts does a car have?
A vehicle has a timing belt and a drive belt. The timing belt links your crankshaft and camshaft and ensures the proper synchronization of the two. On the other hand, a drive belt powers your alternator, water pump, air conditioning compressor, and other components around your engine.
How long do belts last on a car?
Most car belts can last from 60,000 to 100,000 miles under ideal conditions. While some belts last longer than others, most of these components often have recommended drive belt replacement time frames. Some belts need to be manually tensioned and adjusted, while others have self-tensioning mechanisms prone to wear and tear and need to be serviced regularly.
When can you replace a drive belt?
It’s best to have your mechanic check your drive belts during the routine maintenance of your car. They will check for signs of a damaged belt, including:

How far can you drive without a serpentine belt?
If your vehicle doesn’t have a serpentine belt, it can still reach up to two miles before you encounter major engine complications. However, we don’t recommend driving without a serpentine belt. You could risk losing control of your vehicle and having a defective battery while on the road or have total engine failure.
How do you replace a drive belt?
Here are a few simple steps on how you should proceed with replacing your car drive belt:
Wear safety glasses before changing your drive belt.
Check the routing method of your car belt.
Look for the automatic tensioner of the belt if it has any.
Push the tensioner with a serpentine belt tool, breaker bar, or a long-handled wrench to reduce the belt tension.
Hold your tensioner in one hand and remove the belt from one of the accessory pulleys with your other hand.
Move your belt out and away from the other pulleys and the car.
See if your old drive belt and new belt look the same.
Look at the belt routing diagram, then feed the new belt over almost all the pulleys.
Use one hand to hold the belt near the last pulley and another hand to turn the tensioner with your tool.
Place the belt on the last pulley and slowly release the tensioner.
Check if you’ve routed the new belt properly.
Start your engine so you can ensure that the belt is working and routed correctly.
